Gasp! Salt and Sugar are Bad for You!

Please say it isn’t so… salt and sugar, two staples for most Americans, have been found bad for you. Really bad, and unless you’ve been living in a vacuum, it’s likely that you already know this. What’s interesting, though, is that now organizations like like The National Academies Institute of Medicine are coming out to say (link) that it’s so bad the government should get involved to set federal standards to limit the amount of salt that food manufacturers, restaurants, and food service companies can add to their products.

Is it really something that should be in the hands of the government how quickly the average American destroys their body? Does this simply mean that organizations like McDonald’s won’t be putting salt on their fries after pulling them out of the deep fryer, but instead will serve up little bottles of salt for each of us to do it on our own? Can the government, short of rationing salt, really control how much sodium is in the food that the average American consumes each day? Doubtful at best; why invest the time, money, and energy to even try. Wouldn’t this investment be better served by educating people on the benefits of healthy eating? Ehh… probably not that, either.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not supporting the death of America by salt overdose, but as someone that is thankful for those nearly invisible crystals of joy, I’m not asking the government to regulate how my food is prepared, either. I don’t want to die early, but I don’t want to suffer with bland tasting food along the way. Would love to know how you feel about the same thing, but for today that’s my rant!

Leave Tiger Woods Alone

I can’t be the only one tired of reading stories and hearing news about the Tiger Woods’ “transgressions.” Every day there is some new “story” about how Tiger failed. Some reminder that he’s not perfect. Is it tragic – absolutely. Is it front page, leading-story newsworthy – absolutely not. He’s a human being and regardless of what you think for having bought into the brand of Tiger Woods he is no less deserving of common decency and respect than the next person. Just because he is a public figure doesn’t give the media and America the right to smear his name across the headline of every news story, and frankly, if you can’t respect him as an individual, have some compassion and respect for his wife and family. It is Elin that was wronged here, not America.

It’s time to move along folks – this story is well past its 15 minutes.
