Is Sarah Palin the Future of the Republican Party?
If you weren’t a little frightened yesterday, today might be your day. The New York Times is suggesting that “Win or Lose, Many See Palin as Future of Party.” The article goes on to say that this candidacy is her entrance to national politics and that her prospects are just begining. This seems a little premature, especially in light of how much scandal she seems to have caused, but only time will tell. From my perspective, Matthew Dowd, a former bush Strategist, summed it up best:
“She’s an attractive woman who can give a great speech, but the American public doesn’t view her much beyond that,” Mr. Dowd said. “She’s vastly unpopular among moderate and independent voters, and while she could be in a position to be popular among an increasingly smaller Republican Party, she’s got to figure out a way to extend that and figure out a way to strengthen her weaknesses.”
Depending on who you believe, there could be a ton of potential there, while others suggest this is a hopeless grab to get through at least the next four years. Unfortunately, there aren’t many bright lights shining for the Repubilcan Party right now, as made obvious by McCain’s choice of a relatively anonymous running mate.
From the perspective of hope, she has been distancing herself from McCain and by doing more interviews with local television and newspapers and voicing her own opinions – however odd or incoherent they may be. And, it’s very hard to argue with what she must be learning on the campaign trail. She will walk away from this with a ton of experience – win or lose – that will better position her, if she’s willing to accept the knowledge, for the future. The American people will speak their mind and she’s now in a better place to understand what they’re saying.
Still, only time will tell.
