Rafaello Follieri is an Idiot; Anne Hathaway is Still Hot

When word of Raffaello Follieri being questioned about fraud came to light, my first thought was pretty straight-forward: “so that’s the kind of money it takes to date Anne Hathaway?” And, even now, I’m not sure that I blame him all that much – Anne Hathaway is hot!
But, all good things must come to an end, and Raffaello’s 15 minutes are up. People is reporting that Raffaello Follieri has been sentenced to 4.5 years in prison after pleading guilty to 14 counts of wire fraud, money laundering and conspiracy.
Through an interpreter Follieri is quoted as saying “What I did was wrong and there is no point in making excuses. I will never be able to wash away the shame. I just hope that someday those who have been hurt by my actions will forgive me.” Hmmmm… wonder how Anne’s feeling now. (More of my opinion after the jump.)
Anyway, there are two things that I find really funny about this. First is the obvious – Anne Hathaway was surrounded by this day and night and was conned into believing that he was rich, prosperous and working hard. All the while they’re living a whirlwind romance, jetting around the world, and enjoying the perks that come with a $37,000/month Manhattan apartment. Did she ever wonder or is love really that blind. Second, and even more disconcerting is what it must have taken for Follieri to pull this off. Living those lies, coming up with stories, and then living your life as though nothing else matters but your beautiful girlfriend. I have to imagine that requires a tremendous amount of intelligence, charisma, and energy. Why didn’t he put that towards something more morally acceptable and earn some money?
I’m sure we can read about it in the book, which at first blush would appear that he’ll soon be writing to pay off the $1,400 fine that he’s been slapped with. ‘Cause, you know, that’s justice in America. Swindle people for millions and pay them pennies on the thousand. Sounds familiar doesn’t it? Think bailout!

P.S. Yes, I did find better, more flattering pictures of Anne Hathaway, but I figured if your dirty laundry is going to be aired all over the news and internet that your tits should be, too!
